CHAPTER 1: CAKEWALK
One Year After Outbreak
0610 AM
“Hey Sarge, we have trouble!” The crew chief moved away from the open helicopter door and tapped the big sergeant on the knee. The tired NCO grabbed the slung M4 rifle in a gloved hand and slid over to where the chief was pointing outside the aircraft. Far below them was a huge custom Recreational Vehicle that appeared to be towing a trailer behind it. The sergeant could see the RV’s front tire was flat. To the helicopter crew it looked like the driver had pulled off into the empty parking lot of a long-abandoned Walmart to fix it. The problem with that was the huge crowd of deaders that were now swarming the big vehicle trying to force their way inside. To the former Air Force sergeant, it looked like the flesh eaters had stumbled out of the store and over to the motor home. There was at least a dozen of the skin bags gathered in a circle around the front of the RV and appeared to be savagely gobbling up the remains of one of the vehicle's occupants.
“Where the hell are we?” The sergeant asked.
“Ceres.”
“Fuck is that?” The sergeant frowned trying to wake up from his combat nap, the other man just shrugged in response. “Guess we better wake the L-tee. Tell the pilots to hover for a minute.”
“Good luck.” The crew chief smirked as he slid back over to the minigun by the open door. “He’ll be okay. The most he’ll get is a spray and pray.”
“Lieutenant Uribe.” The muscular sergeant shook the officer awake with a gloved hand. “Lieutenant.”
“Sergeant Hale?” The younger officer slowly opened one eye and carefully sat up in his net seat. He adjusted his helmet all bleary eyed and glanced around the fuselage of the helicopter.
“We back at camp yet?” Uribe asked wiping some caked drool from his mouth.
“No sir. We have civilians below that need our help.”
“Sergeant,” The officer wiped his eyes. “We have orders to report back to Camp FedEx. If some civilians have their asses in a wringer that’s just too bad.” The Lieutenant noticed the aircraft wa
sn’t moving forward. “Are we hovering?”
“Yes.” The sergeant nodded. “I had the pilots hold up. We have a motorhome below surrounded by deaders. “
“Well, crap.” Uribe glanced at the other four soldiers that were under his command. They all looked tired and beat up but ready to go. “How about we send some rounds their way and give them a chance to break for safety.”
“To where sir?” Hale asked. “Their vehicle is obviously disabled and this town is full of meat sacks.”
“We shoot at those fuckers, sir,” Specialist Jose ‘Speedy’ Gonzales, interrupted. “It’ll only draw in more.”
“What do you guys suggest?” Uribe yawned and slid his helmet farther back on his head. The team had been out on a supply run and no one had slept for twenty-four hours.
“The deaders are too close to the motorhome to risk turning it into swiss cheese. Drop Doc and me away from them and we’ll bring the fuckers in towards us.”
“Can’t we just drop down on top?” A red-haired soldier asked as she pulled out her iPod earplugs and leaned in closer to the sergeant.
“Too many skin bags down there. They might push the motorhome over and that would be very bad. As soon as we get the meat sacks clear, you hover and rope down on the top. Pull the civilians out through the roof hatch.” Hale told her as he grabbed several pre-loaded ammo magazines out of a black canvas bag and quickly shoved them into his tac vest pouches.
“Then what do we do with them?” Uribe scratched his mop of black hair. The sergeant had only worked with the new Lieutenant a few times. Not the brightest, but he was usually able to manipulate him into making the right decision.
“We drop them off at the aide station.” Hale slapped him roughly on the side of his arm then tossed the ammo bag to Doc. “You’ll be a big hero L-T.”
“Alright, alright.” Uribe tapped on his headset and gave the pilots the order to move the helicopter away from the besieged motorhome.
CHAPTER 2: LIS
Lis didn’t think she could take any more of the unholy moaning or the slapping and pounding of the dead hands on the outside of their motorhome. The red headed teenager grabbed her younger sister closer to her as both girls huddled inside the small windowless bathroom. Her mother had shoved both girls inside and closed the door. Lisa's older sister and their mother were in the main cabin of the coach trying to make sure everything was secure. As the vehicle rocked back and forth from the weight of the undead, the teenager knew it was only a matter of time before they got inside and did to them what they had done to her father. With a tear running down her cheek she held Lacey tighter. The younger girl sobbed more for the loss of their father than the imminent danger outside.
“Lis…Lis…” Lacey mumbled. “Where’s mom?”
“It’s okay Lace, she and Lydia are just making sure the doors and windows are locked until help comes.”
“Help?” The girl looked up at her with wet eyes.
“Yes. Someone will come along.” There was a loud thump on the side of the motorhome and both girls screamed. The bathroom door quickly flew open and their older sister Lydia, peered inside.
“You two okay?” She asked clutching their father’s .38 pistol to her chest, eyes swollen from crying.
“Yes.” Lis nodded. “Where’s mom?”
“Upfront. She’s going to try and drive the motorhome out of here with the flat tires.”
“Dad?” Lacey swallowed.
“Sweetie.” Lydia just shook her head slowly and sadly. The youngest Brook’s girl just started to quietly sob again.
“Too bad we can’t get to the bikes.” Lis said stroking her sister’s hair. Lydia just nodded silently. Both girls were championship motorcycle racers and their bikes were sitting uselessly in the trailer behind them.
“That’s what dad was trying to do before…” She hung her head down as the big motorhome rocked a little more violently. The girls could hear the rumble of the diesel engine as their mother started the vehicle. The engine made a groaning sound then died. “No.” Lydia said quietly. “Stay here.” She told the two girls.
“Lace…” Above all the other noise inside the coach there was a sound Lis had recognized from some of the air shows their father had taken them to over the years. It was the sound of hope. It was the sound of a military helicopter.
CHAPTER 3: BAIT
“You sure about this?” Doc Kegy shouted above the noise of the chopper. He held the fast rope in a gloved hand and stared over at the big sergeant that was doing the same.
“Cakewalk.” The sergeant winked at the other soldier.
“Ready?” The crew chief asked. The sergeant just nodded as he gave a thumb up to the lieutenant.
“Don’t forget us.”
“Who?” The chief smiled as he slid behind the mini gun and swept the deader filled parking lot for targets. The crew chief opened fire on several slow moving undead as both soldiers quickly descended down the ropes to the ground. The expended brass from the helicopter's mini gun rained down on them as soon the two soldiers hit the pavement. The chopper lifted into the sky, away from the soldiers and the motorhome.
“I really hope they’re coming back.” Doc said, pulling back the charging handle on his rifle. “It’s a long fucking walk back to base.”
“You okay Doc?” The sergeant brought his rifle up to a combat position.
“Never been better!” The medic nodded drawing his weapon up to point shoulder. “I live for this shit!” Doc said sarcastically.
“You are one twisted individual Doc.” Hale fired a burst toward the crowd of deaders surrounding the motorhome.
“That chopper better come back for us!” Doc shouted as he pulled the trigger on his M4.
“I’ve done so much running this year, I think I'm gonna have to give up smoking!”
“They’ll be back Doc. Cross will make sure of it!”
Upon hearing the rifle blast, the flesh eaters, that were gathered around the vehicle, quickly lost interest in the yummy goodness inside. The mass of hungry undead focused their total, milky eyed attention at the sergeant and Doc.
“Shit.” Doc squeezed off a round that struck one of the deaders square in the face, dropping it lifelessly to the ground.
“Looks like we just rang the dinner bell!” Hale fired off several rounds knocking some of the rapidly advancing deaders flat on their backs. Looking for a warm piece of flesh, the undead ran, staggered and crawled in the two men’s direction. The unnerving moans and the all too familiar smell of death were swiftly closing in on them. Hale prayed his plan would work as he fired off more rounds at the reanimated dead.
CHAPTER 4: YOUR OWN PANTIES
“Good to go!” The crew chief shouted as he leaned out of the helicopter's open door and watched the last of the deaders stumble after the two soldiers. “Meat sacks are taking the bait!”
“Great,” Uribe spoke into his headset. “Get us over to the RV.”
“Copy that.” The pilot responded in the lieutenant’s ear. “Hold onto your panties ladies!”
“Your own panties Speedy.” The female soldier said to Specialist Gonzales, who was smiling lewdly at her as she bent over to grab the rescue harness from under her seat.
“Sarge…” The young soldier frowned clearly embarrassed.
“Zip it up and wake up Duley.” She said quickly clipping the harness onto one of the fast ropes.
“I’m awake.” The fifth member of the team lifted the baseball cap from his eyes and sat up. “Need help Red?” The black soldier asked with a yawn.
“Grab one of these fast ropes. You and I are going to see if we can be of some service to the locals.”
“I’ll go.” Uribe started to reach for a rope, the female pulled it away and smiled.
“L-Tee, you're too important. You have to run this show. Duley and I got this.”
“It’s alright lieutenant.” The black soldier said grabbing the fast rope. “The captain will be pissed at us if we bring you bac
k all broken and shit.”
“Right.” Uribe nodded in agreement as he watched the two soldiers work. “Just be careful.”
“Always.” The female winked.
“Winch is ready to go.” Speedy said.
“Great.” Duley knelt next to the female as he connected the rescue harness. “You good Red?”
“Yep, you?”
“Hungry.” He smirked. “Wonder what kinda chow we have back at Camp Fedex?”
“Does it really matter?” She said as she checked the ammo mags in her tac vest then slung the M4 securely across her chest.
“Not really.” Duley nodded as he checked his own gear.
“Over target.” The pilot said in Uribe’s headset.
“Time to go.” The lieutenant waved for the two soldiers to move.
CHAPTER 5: SOLDIERS
Lis could hear the loud reports of automatic weapons. The sounds were very close to the ones she’d heard when the dead had overrun the National Guard unit that had been helping with the evacuation of their neighborhood. Lacey shivered in her arms as the guns continued to discharge outside of the confines of the motorhome. Lis had real hope that all the gunfire meant they were about to be saved.
“It’s going to be okay Lace.” She kissed her sister on the cheek. “That sound is the good guys coming to save us.” She hoped. Her dad had to pull his gun on a few shady looking characters a few days back. A lot of evil people were now running around doing horrible things to others. Lacey looked up at her sister and smiled.
“Dad?” She asked hopefully.
“Oh, Lace.” She hugged her tightly. Lis knew the girl’s five-year-old mind was still processing the horrible death of their father. “Soldiers.”
“Girls!” Their mother, followed by Lydia, stepped into the doorway of the bathroom. Lara Brooks eyes were bloodshot and her black hair was a mess but she still seemed to be in control of her emotions. She had to for her daughters. “There are soldiers outside. They seem to be chasing away the…the…dead.”
